Family Tradition

It's amazing how plans can change so quickly. We were supposed to have gone to Savannah to see Batman and DH's parents but Ladybug has a stomach bug. She is doing surprisingly good about running to the potty when she feels the urge. I'm so proud of her.

So instead of driving to Savannah, we had our usual Friday Night Pizza Night and a movie. We ordered Dominoes since I hadn't gone to the grocery store for our usual Digiorno pizzas. (Because we were not suppose to be in town) and had License to Wed from netflix (love netflix). The movie was cute. I love Mandy Moore and Robin Williams. It was funny how many actors from The Office had a part in this movie. DH said it must have had the same director. We sort of started having Friday Night Pizza Night about a year ago and pretty much have it every Friday night we are in town. Have you ever thought about family traditions you have set for your family? Momma told me she and Dad used to have Friday Night Pizza Night and Movie when they first were married. She told me this funny story about how my uncle and aunt would come over frequently on Fridays because they knew mom and dad would have pizza. She said my aunt was about as big as Twiggy and could eat half the pizza by herself. Mom and Dad would get so upset about it that finally one Friday night they saw them pull into the driveway and my Dad told my Mom to hide the pizza in the back bedroom. My Mom thought for sure my aunt would smell out the pizza so she laughed at my Dad, but Dad said go ahead. Well sure enough, my uncle and aunt waltzed right in and sat down expecting the pizza to show up. My aunt kept saying, "I smell pizza!" over and over and looking in all the cabinets in the kitchen, the oven and the refrigerator. My Mom and Dad just sat on the the couch acting oblivious to what she was saying. Finally after she looked the place over (except the bedroom where the pizza was stashed) they left. Mom and Dad laughed about the whole ordeal while they enjoyed their pizza. I didn't even know my parents had such a tradition until she told me this story about a week ago.

It's ironic how things are passed down. I also make homemade pancakes on the weekends. I wish I could tell you I came up with the recipe all on my own, but that would be a lie. I was on Weight Watchers a few years ago and bought a recipe book from them. It has the best recipes in there. Here is my favorite pancake recipe:

Apple Cinnamon Pancakes
  • 1-1/4 cup all purpose flour
  • 2 Tbsp sugar
  • 2 tsp baking powder
  • 1/4 tsp baking soda
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1 cup lowfat buttermilk (I make my own with 2% milk and white vinegar)
  • 1/2 cup cinnamon applesauce (from my homemade applesauce)
  • 1 Tbsp vegetable oil
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 large egg beaten
  • cooking spray
Combine flour & next 5 ingredients in a large bowl, whisk or sift. In another bowl combine buttermilk & next 4 ingredients, whisk smooth. Add buttermilk to flour and stir until smooth. Using a 1/4 cup measuring cup, pour 1/4 cup pancake batter into preheated pan or griddle sprayed with cooking spray. Weight Watchers suggests melting apple jelly or heat fat free caramel sauce for non traditional toppings. I used my Ginger Cinnamon Pear Preserves. They were yummy!
