Access to books is essential to reading development. However, did you know that over 80 percent of childcare centers serving low-income children lack age-appropriate books? And a recent study shows that the ratio of books per child in middle income neighborhoods is 13 to 1, while in low-income neighborhoods, the ratio is 1 age-appropriate book for every 300 children.
The Cheerios family of cereals, First Book and Jon Scieszka, author of the popular “Trucktown” series and other children’s books, have joined together to deliver 100,000 books to community-based programs serving children in need – and we’d love your help! All you have to do is go online with your child and test your combined knowledge of children’s books by answering trivia questions related to “Trucktown” and other great children’s books.
For every trivia question answered correctly, you can cast one vote for the state you would like to receive books. The five states receiving the most votes will get 20,000 books each, for a total of 100,000 books. Visit www.FirstBook.org/Scieszka to test your knowledge and start voting.
MyBlogSpark contacted me about this review and giveaway for Cheerios and a variety of books, I couldn't reply fast enough!
The first thing I noticed was that each book is written in English and Spanish, on the same page. I love this idea! My daughter watches Spanish cartoons and we have friends who are bi-lingual. So she understands some simple Spanish words and phrases. Since I can read Spanish but have difficulty knowing exactly what I'm reading, I found it helpful to see the English translation above the Spanish rendition. So far we've read "Tea for Ruby" and "Ballyhoo Bay". These little books are adorable! And I know your little one(s) will enjoy them too!
Cheerios through MyBlogSpark provided us with a free box of their Frosted Cheerios variety of cereal. We have never tried this cereal before now and I have say, we love it. Our family loves cereal and since I have a 17 month old baby who likes to feed himself, these are the perfect breakfast accompanied by a banana and a sippy cup full of milk. We also received a $25 gift card to Barnes and Noble. We were just there over the weekend to pick a couple of great books so I know we are going to be able to put this to some good use -- we are a bunch of bookworms in our family!
Now for the giveaway information: MyBlogSpark along with Cheerios will provide one reader with an assortment of books, one of the many varieties of Cheerios cereal and a $25 gift card to Barnes & Noble.
