Shopping Trip 1/15/10: Blew My Budget!

I'm still trying to work out a routine for shopping at Publix on Thursday since that is the day our sales change and the day they will be offering the "penny item".  Guess my shopping day will have to move from Sunday afternoon to Thursdays or Fridays.  So here's what I got today:

 Walgreens:
(4) Quaker Oatmeal $3.00
(1) Colgate toothpaste $2.99
(2) Mandarin Oranges $1.29
(1) Thermacare $2.49
- $3/2 Quaker Oatmeal NADQ
- $1/2 Mandarin Oranges NADQ
- (4) $1/1 Quaker Oatmeal coupons
- $1/1 Colgate Max Toothpaste coupon (All You magazine)
- $3 RR
- $2 RR
- $1 RR
= 8 items $1.48 OOP saved $19.08 (%) $.19 each item received $2.50 RR & $2 RR for next week

Publix:
(2) Green Giant Frozen boxed Lima Beans $.50 each
(3) I Can't Believe It's Not Butter $.25 each
(1) Hellman's Mayonnaise $1.72 each
(4) Del Monte canned Green Beans $.40 each
(2) Kraft 2% Cheese $1.50 each
(2) Smuckers Low Sugar Apricot Preserves $1.10 each
(2) Kellogg's Froot Loops Cereal $.99 each (I used 2 blinkies $1/1)
(1) Jolly Time Popcorn FREE
= $12.22 OOP saved $31.14 (%)
(I'm probably going to try to go back later on to see about the Chobani yogurt.  They didn't have any on the shelf and they can't issue a raincheck for Advantage Buy items.  It's free with the coupon until February 5.)

Kroger:
(4) G2 Gatorade FREE
(5) StarKist Tuna fish pouches FREE
(1) 5 lb bag of potatoes $1.29 each
(6) Kroger 8 oz cheese $1.50 each
(1) Kroger 8 oz Swiss $1.99 each
= $12.94 OOP saved $22.49 (%)

Aldi:
Bananas $1.23
Navel Oranges $1.49 x 2
Gala Apples $1.49
Carrots $1.19
Pineapple $.99
Grapefruit $1.29
Pears $.99
32 oz Plain Yogurt $1.59
Cookie Icing (clearance $.49)
Bread $.79 x 2
Tortilla Chips $.99
= $14.81 OOP (unbelievably cheap prices for all that fruit!)

I completely blew my budget for the week so I took from next week's food budget. (Poor Peter, robbing him to pay Paul!)  I'm not doing a very good job with my cash envelope budget system.  I hope it gets easier!

The Publix sales are totally throwing me off.  I won't have to pick up anything else for next week accept for the Pepsi deal at CVS and if there are any freebies at Kroger.  So hopefully it will even out.

Found your site through Menu Plan & wanted to leave some encouragement. We have been doing the envelope system for almost a year now and it was really tough at first and we were constantly breaking our own rules.

It does get easier, and it may take adjusting the budget a little. It looks like you got a lot of great stuff and spending money on fresh produce is never a bad thing. Keep it up and good luck!!

You can't be serious that the fruit was that cheap?!?!?! I'd have bought the whole store out at those prices!!!! I'm still getting used to the cash envelope system, too, so I'm excited to see how it's working for you :)

It is hard to get used to a new routine, I am still trying and I only adjusted my shopping trip by 1 day. You got a lot of great deals, way to go!

We went over our weekly budget this week too - had a long talk with hubby about the value of stocking up or sticking to a limit. His opinion is that we'll need to assess things regularly to make sure we aren't spending money on stocking up that we could earn interest on/use more immediately. And we have to have a plan to make sure it all gets used up! I'm loving that the EFTP challenge has made me get into the habit of meal planning - I think that will solve it for us!

I hate that Publix moved their penny item. It is really messing with my system. I don't really want to shop for groceries on Wednesday because there are to many other things going on.
