How Does Your Garden Grow - Week of May 17th

Late last week, I found out termites had infested our little swimming-pool-turned-raised-beds.  They ate 2 of my 3 jalapeno pepper plants and I was VERY upset.  While they are in the other pool, I don't see any affects of them eating on the eggplant or watermelon, but we are waiting...

In the meantime, I transplanted the remaining jalapeno pepper plant and both butternut squash seedlings to avoid death-by-termites.

Here's what our little vegetable garden looks like.  We have a right side and a left side, when I come in from the back yard.  We have a little path down the middle.  10 tomato plants and green beans are on the left side and 5 tomato plants, carrots, potatoes, squash and flowers are on the right side.  My husband and brother are doing some work on our crawl space entry and I had them pick me up some heavy-duty tomato cages while they were out.

Everything is growing great.  We have a little jalapenos...

There seems to be a little black bug eating holes in my eggplant leaves.  Despite that damage, there is a little eggplant bud...

green beans are climbing...

tomatoes have buds...

We have a couple of blooms on the Bell Pepper...

The purple potatoes have been covered twice and are about 12-18" deep currently.  I don't think I can get any more dirt on top so I'm going to leave them until they are ready for harvesting later on...
So now we are dealing with bug control and waiting to see our little blooms turn into fruit.  I'm so excited!

Jealous - so jealous of your blossoms! :) My seeds are in the ground - that is all. We just need some sunshine and warmth. You have a beautiful garden!

Wow, things are growing so well. I keep waiting for sun here in Oregon... we are off to a slow start. have you been successful in the past with getting cukes to climb? I tried a couple of years ago without much luck; wondering if I should try it again. Thanks for sharing.

Oh damn those pesky beasts! Where is Tommy Lee Jones and Will Smith in their Men in Black outfits to come to your rescue?! ;-)

Your garden looks amazing. I hope you get the bugs outta there soon! I am disappointed that I missed my opportunity to plant this year. I was going to do it in May but my surgery has set me back. I just don't have the energy and can't stand the heat these days. I'll do it next year though! Any suggestions for potted plants/veggies? Maybe I could still do that?

Thanks for the blurb.com suggestion for cookbook printing. I forget to tell you that I actually found your other blog with food recipes first, before I found this one. I think I was actually reading both of them before I realized you were the same person.... LOL! I am dense sometimes! ;-) I don't even remember how I found you -- just some blog hopping around and I think I saw you linked on another site. So glad I clicked over!

I luv veggie gardens! Yours is looking really healthy and starting to take off! I have one too in my backyard and I especially enjoy when it's harvest time. I planted corn for the first time and can't wait till summer to enjoy them.

We don't have too much trouble here with termites- it's carpenter ants in our region. I did not know that termites ate plants, though- wow.

I love how you're using your space, Candi. And the newspaper to keep down the weeds- love the stuff. :)

Thanks for sharing your gardening photos. I garden in pots on my porch and even have a tomato/pepper, cucumber pot! I used to do a huge garden in the ground and so enjoyed it. I need to start doing that again. I'm located in Woodstock, GA. We have a gift store here. If you are close by, stop in and say "Hi"! I signed up to follow your blog.

Thanks for visiting my blog. I will have to follow your progress since you are in Georgia. I planted my peas, onions and potatoes about Feb 20th. The lettuce shortly thereafter. I hope to have a fall crop as well. The cool season veggies seem to do well. The warm season stuff ends up falling victim to heat, bugs and disease before the summer ends.
