In the Kitchen: Sun Tea

In the kitchen this week, I should really be writing, "on the back porch", but you'll get the idea.

I don't know about you, but I grew up drinking "sun tea".  Back in the day (around 1983 or so) my Momma had gotten the really cool 1-gallon glass pitcher jars with the drain spout near the bottom.  In the morning, she'd fill the jar with water, dangle in 3 or 4 tea bags, screw the lid on and sit the pitcher on the picnic table in the back yard in full sun.  Within a few hours, the sun had warmed the water and brewed the tea.  She'd add some sugar to sweeten it, because that's what works for us, and we'd drink "sun tea".  I remember thinking it was the coolest thing ever!

Sunday, my daughter and I drove to the Dollar Tree to see what kind of goodies we could get for $1.00.  While there, I saw some small spouted pitchers, perfect for making sun tea.  These were plastic and will probably last about 1 whole week, but I thought the kids would love to see the tea brew by the sun's warmth.  Of course, in true homeschooling fashion, we turned it into a "science experiment" and discussed how the tea was brewed.  You know you're a mommy when you are trying to relive your past with your kids.  Thankfully they loved it!

How about you?  Did you grow up drinking "sun tea"?

Yes, yes we did! Wow, this brings back memories for me that's for sure! I think I'll do this this summer too!

I did! My mom used to make this every summer, which when you grow up in the Mojave Desert of Southern California, that's like from March through November, so we had tons of it!

We used to have sun tea a lot. What fun to watch it brew.

I tried this with the tea I grow once and that time it didn't work, but I'll need to try this again. I love my garden tea, we make lots of it during the summer!

I'd love if you'd link this to my Tuesday's Tips! Thanks!

Of course! We must expose them to all of our same traditions and memories so that we can live it again. :)

Now I have a great excuse to get one of those big glass jugs with the spout on the bottome!! To teach my children to make sun tea, of course!!! But I think I'll like making it too!!

My mom made it too in the mid 80's. We also had the jar with the spout. Ours was clear with strawberry's on it and it had a red spout and red lid with handle. I had forgotten all about sun tea. Like Christina said I now have an excuse to get a new jar!

I don't think my mom ever made sun tea, but I do remember my aunt making it. I thought it was pretty neat!

I was wanting to make sun tea this week, but I don't have that kind of container. I guess a regular pitcher would work...right?

I don't think we ever did sun tea, but I am so going to now. Just love it and we have plenty of sun already, ugh. Might as well make tea.
