How Does Your Garden Grow? 3/1/11

How's the weather been in your neck of the woods?

Well, here in Georgia, we're having spring fever!  Daffodils and Cherry Trees are blooming, trees are putting out their leaves, tiny grass shoots are coming up in my garden...woah!

Yes!  I've already been weeding and prepping my vegetable beds.  In fact, a few weeks ago I covered the beds with newspaper and tossed some composted cow manure over them to keep them in place.  Yeah, not so much!  In comes the wind and blows the newspapers all across our yard across the street and all along the road.  Even my neighbor was picking up newspapers in his yard!  It was embarrassing!

Yesterday, the kids and I spent a few hours in the yard transplanting daffodils and daylilies into our "landscape plan".  Remember, we're doing this DIY or I should say ABM (all-by-myself) LOL!  The kids were making mud pies.  They were having so much fun, probably ruined their clothes, but fun.

Have you already decided what to plant in your garden?

We really had fun last year with our little garden and planning to keep our favorites:
carrots
green beans
butternut squash
cucumbers
tomatoes
bell peppers
jalapeno peppers
watermelons
summer squash (yellow squash)
zucchini squash

We're not going to fiddle with potatoes, although we did try these last year.  However, I would love to keep trying a new vegetable each year.  This year I'm going to try a French Melon.  I'll let you know what I think of it...

I really like the benefit of flowers in the garden.  They bring butterflies, bees, wasps and all kinds of good insects to pollinate the vegetables.  Last year we planted sunflowers, nasturtiums and zinnias.  We'll do the same this year and plant more of them.

Enjoy!

It's funny you should ask ;) My son and I just got going yesterday. We got out the grow pellets, and watered them and watched them grow. We planted the peppers and tomato seeds, so that they could get started. We picked out all of our other seeds (many, many). We will be growing lots of veggies as the prices in the stores seem to be going up, up, up and for $10.00 of seeds we can get much more than that from the garden with a bit of labor and love.

We are still having some snow on the ground. I think after 1month we can already start our vegetable garden. My kids are already excited for their gardening experience. Actually this will be our first time. I just hope that it will have a great result. Good luck to all of us.
