Frugal Gardening: Transplanting Seedlings to Newspaper Pots

Last year I had watched a video on youtube about how to make your own plant pots.  Then I read this post and knew I could do it.  So this year we started our seeds in a peat pellet starter kit.  We had pretty good success, so far!

Now it's time to move them to a little bigger pot, the newspaper pot.  If you follow me on twitter, you'll know last week I rolled and stuffed 48 newspaper pots.  And then a few weeks ago while at Lowe's Home Improvement Store, they were going to throw away some pot trays and said I could have them.  Over the weekend, we all piled into the van and went back to Lowe's to pick up some bagged compost.  We bought cow manure compost and mushroom compost.  Both of which are terrific for flower gardens and figured they would be good for vegetables too.

Today, Haylei and I filled the pots with compost and the seedlings and set them in a cool place until they can get acclimated.

Yellow Tomatoes - 12
Beefsteak Tomatoes - 12
Cherry Tomatoes - 12
Roma Tomatoes - 12
Italian Parsley - 6
Cilantro - 5

I'm hoping at least half of each kind make it to the planting process...
It will be another month before we can plant them into the ground here.  The last frost date is estimated to be March 24th for our area.  I'll plan to plant them around the first of April.

I hope you guys are having good success with your garden preparations!

Enjoy!

We did seedlings too! I'll have to check out the video cause I'm worried they'll get too big before we can plant! I've just been spraying mine down every other day! How are you watering your?

I think mine got a little "leggy" and I don't think I transplanted them correctly, we'll wait and see how they survive :) I'd been watering them from the bottom of the seed starting tray. Today was the first day of their new life and I watered them from above from a watering can. Not sure if that was a good idea either. Poor things, I think they're not going to make it.
