Top Ten Tuesday: 10 Things to do with Apples

This is a picture from last year's picking.

We've tried to create a new family tradition of apple picking.  Saturday we'll be driving up and spending the whole day at the orchards picking and eating apples.  This will be our third year.  We love going to the mountains and one day, we hope to move up there and stay forever.

So what do you do with pounds and pounds of apples?  Well let's see:

1.  Eat the apples!  Fresh, in season apples are the best tasting apples ever!  In fact, I don't even buy apples at the grocery store unless it's apple season.

2.  Make applesauce.  Applesauce was so easy to make.  I am a complete novice when it comes to preserving and canning, but even I could do this.

3.  Turn applesauce into apple butter.  I'm so looking forward to trying my hand at this.  My cousin Billie is currently making apple butter at her house in Illinois.  She has trees full of apples and says she's been canning for days.  She shared a simple recipe for the crock-pot that I plan on using next week.  I'll let you know how it turns out.

4.  Make apple pie.  My husband doesn't like apple pie.  Can you believe that?!?  I love anything and everything, guess that's why I need to lose 50 pounds.  But anyway, I make this apple pie and freeze it.  When we're going to a gathering or something, I'll bake one up and take it with us.  It's delicious!
5.  Bake apple cake or muffins.  Gloria Carter, a former co-worker, shared this recipe in our company-wide cookbook.  It's so good!  She used to bring them into the office and we'd eat on it all week, if it lasted that long!  I've been making them into muffins and they turn out just as good.
6.  Use applesauce to make pancakes.
7.  Dry apples in the oven or dehydrator to snack on.  Pick Your Own has some great information on how to do this on your own.

8.  Make an Appalachian Apple Stack Cake.  I can't wait to make this and share my Granny's recipe with y'all.  It's my dad's favorite cake and something I've made once since her death.  I'll share this real soon, I promise!

9.  Fry up some Fried Apples.  This is a regional thing.  In Appalachia country, fried apples are chopped apples, cooked on the stove top with sugar and butter.  You can spread it on biscuits or eat it straight up as a side dish.  It's so good.  In Southern cooking, you can dip an apple ring into batter and deep fry it.  Sprinkle with some powdered sugar and enjoy.

10.  Caramel Apple Sticky Buns.  I tried Pioneer Woman's recipe a couple of weeks ago at the bakery using my cinnamon bun recipe and they were super successful.  SO good!

How do you use up fresh apples?

Thanks so much for visiting my blog! We visited BJ Reece this year- I got the information from your blog. I also used the info you posted about the Adams berry farm from here so thank you so much. We just moved to the ATL area four months ago so I am still learning what there is available.

I also am starting to work out. I am doing couch 2 5K and plan on running my first 5K in November.
What area of the ATL are you in? We are north at about 11 o'clock.

Thank you again for all of the great information you put on your blog!
