Slimmer This Summer - Week 5 Update

I'm happy to report I've lost 1.6 lbs since last week.  I'm sure it's a result from my increased exercise.  At first, I wanted to jog 2 miles each to reach a 300 calorie burn.  I did that Monday and Tuesday.  Then on Wednesday, I was really, really tired, but knew I made a promise to myself so at 9:45 p.m. I started up the treadmill.  But instead of jogging at 4.5 mph, I increased the incline to 12% grade and walked at 3 mph.  When I reached 15 minutes, I had burned 200 calories.  I decreased the speed to 2.5 mph and walked another 10 minutes to reach the 300 calorie burn.  It was great!  My legs were wobbly when I got off.  The repeated this on Thursday night.  Friday we went in the ministry and walked up and down a hilly street for 45 minutes in the heat.  I'm sure I didn't burn the 300 calories, but I was so wiped out.  I didn't do any extra exercising when I got home.  My goal is to jog 5 mph for 15 minutes and then increase the incline to 12% grade and walk at 3 mph until I reach 300 calorie burn.  I'm planning to do this on Saturday or Sunday, maybe both!

My food intake has been pretty good.  I'm getting bored with breakfast, so I'm going to be thinking of some other ideas.  Maybe some pancakes wrapped in sausage?  And my fruit has been lacking a little.  I miss the good apples at the market.  I can barely wait until we go to the mountains to pick some.  Homemade applesauce is nothing compared to what we buy at the grocery store.  The only problem is, the kids and I eat it up so fast.  It barely lasts us 2 months!

Started the challenge at 205 - June 12, almost 4 weeks ago
Currently weigh 202.0 - July 8
Goal is 199 by July 22...which means I need to lose 1.5 lbs each week for the next 2 weeks to be in "one"derland.

I also wanted to talk to you all about rewarding yourself.  How do you reward yourself after reaching milestone goals?  I find myself lapsing into "food" rewards.  You know what I'm talking about...I lost 1.6 pounds this week so let's go out for Mexican tonight and then Dairy Queen afterward.  Not good!  I read someone's post last week about letting a balloon fly off for each pound lost.  I loved that idea!  I believe she did it at the end of the month.  I'm a very visual person and like the idea of seeing the "pounds" float away.

How do you reward yourself?

Hope you all have a great week!

Enjoy!

Nice job! I am working on non-food rewards for myself as well as the rest of the family. Why are they so hard to come up with? I look forward to seeing what other are doing.

I treat myself every day! I eat Special K chocolate for breakfast.. Mmmmm delicious. I can taste that chocolate for quite some time afterwards.. so I brush my teeth before.. not after.. Delicious!! REALLY!! It has less sugar than MANY healthy cereals, and lots of fiber. I don't like most "healthy" cereals, but this one is a definate winner!

Keep up the great work Candi! You're doing amazing!

The balloons are a great idea. When I lost my 20 pounds last summer, I rewarded myself by picking up a new item for me every now and then, something inexpensive like a pair of cheap earrings, something from the dollar bin at Target or whatever. Mostly I took photos of myself and my progress to keep me motivated. I asked my husband to encourage me and motivate me too. It really helped.

Best of luck for continued success!

Congrats on the loss! That was me on the balloons!! LOL. It was fun and yes I did it at the end of the first month. I wasn't so prepared but I did put up a blog with the pictures:-)

I have to think of ways to celebrate that aren't food related and not really buying myself stuff cause I buy myself stuff already so that never feels special and there really isn't anything I want enough to consider it a reward.

That's how the balloons came about, it's a way to visualize letting go of that weight for good. I think at the end of month 2 it won't be 1 for each pound cause there were a few issues so maybe 2 with the numbers in total pounds written on them or something. I have a month to think about it:-)

Get a manicure, a pedicure, a massage. Buy yourself some fresh flowers for the table. Download one song for your ipod or buy a CD or a book. Buy yourself a pretty place setting for the table. Are there some coffees or teas you like? There are so many things!!!

Congrats on the loss. I am currently working on a little rewards list for myself - non food related of course. It's hard when your world has revolved around food for so long to somehow view it so differently.

Oh, you are so close to Onederland. And you will holler. I did! :)

I don't do food rewards anymore. At all. Even when hubby suggests a fancy dinner out for a milestone reward, I'll say, no, take me out to get a pair of shoes. :D

I do clothes and shoes now. My feet shrank, and earlier this year, my shoes just stopped fitting. So, I need to get back a shoe wardrobe bit by bit. I also was changing clothing size every 6 weeks to 2 months, so clothes needed to be bought. It's easy to make rewards stuff you like and need.

I also rewarded myself with an Aveda salon conditioning treatment and blow-out. My hair is curly and I wear it natural, but for a change/treat, I had an hour of luxury pampering at a nice, scented salon, with scalp massage, hand massage, etc.

Totally stop thinking of food as reward. It's what got us in trouble to start with--using food for stuff we ought not use food for. :(

Happy new challenge week!

Congrats on the loss:-) I don't really treat myself much as I find that even if I do lose a pound I just seem to gain it again the next week. I think what I need to do is set more exercise goals for myself, and if I do those, then maybe treat myself to a new lipstick or magazine or something!
Here's to another great week for you.

I really like Denise's idea!

Rewards are so important, but NOT food rewards! When I hit 60 pounds gone, I got a new bike helmet, and signed up for a 26 mile ride.

I go for rewards that are encouraging to continued work, like new workout gear, running shoes, a water bottle, etc.

Great work!

I like the idea of buying new workout things. I really do need a new pair of sneakers so I think when I reach 199, I'm gonna go out and buy me a new pair. Y'all have some great ideas! Can't wait to read more! I also agree with Miss April, your mind has to do a reset regarding food. For so long, that's all I would think about. Now I'm coming to realize food is fuel. Funny how it's taken me 37 years to figure that out!

I am not too big on rewards either. But one thing I do is treat myself to a pedicure when I feel the need for a reward. Mostly just losing weight and getting fitter is enough for me. I am enjoying my new "me" tremendously.

You are doing great! Keep up the awesome work. :)

Good for you! That's a steep incline to stick with for 25 minutes!

I agree, it's hard to find appropriate rewards, especially when I'm SO good at rationalizing: I worked out today so I can have ice cream, etc. I've been on a book-buying spree lately so I guess that's my reward!

Seeing the weight come off IS the reward. Love the idea of the balloons or some other way to visually let go of the weight. I've been treating myself to bras and underwear lately. I needed them bad.

Congrats on your progress. Keep up the good work but no more food rewards unless it's fresh fruit or veggies. Rock on!

Just found your blog and been busy reading through your posts! This is my new must read! :)

I don't always have money for my rewards, but there's ways to make it cheap. I'd love to go get a pedicure or whatever when I lose 5 pounds. So as a cheap way I take time for myself (with 2 kids that are 2 & 3 this is huge), it may just be a foot soap in epson salt and a new nail poslish color or nail stickers. I then set a 15lb goal and when i reach that goal i do buy myself something. New article of clothing (since after 15lbs it's needed!) or new work out clothes. Nothing more motivating than feeling and looking good at the gym! :)
