How Does Your Garden Grow? 4/19/11

Over the weekend we planted our five blueberry bushes.  These were a great find last fall.  Lowe's had them on clearance for $2 each.  I was so happy, we bought three of one kind and two of another.  From what I've read about blueberry bushes, we need to plant at least two different varieties near each other so they can cross pollinate.

I found another volunteer, a little tomato plant...

Remember last week, we found some cucumbers and some Black Eyed Susan volunteers.

I bought a couple of tomato plants from the store...Beef Master and an heirloom variety.  I have a few more to purchase.  Hopefully, we can get everything done over the weekend.

Here's a couple of things blooming in the yard:
Souvenir de la Malmaison - I picked all of these before the storm came through.  They smell heavenly!

Mock Orange bush - so pretty.  We originally planted this about 9 years ago.  It needed to be moved so we can do our DIY Backyard project.  It had gotten to large, we divided into three different bushes.

Knock Out Pink rose bushes - lots of color for summer blooms.

Wild Blackberry bushes.  I left these to grow so the kids could pick the fruit and we can make our annual Blackberry Cobbler

This Nelly Moser clematis was dug up by a back hoe and planted in the back yard last year.  Look how pretty it's doing!
I planted some allium around my vegetable garden last year to keep the rabbits and deer away.  It worked last year, so I'm hoping it works this year too!

Here's another clematis.  I don't think it's the Jackmanii, I can't remember what it's called.  Do any of you know?

Louisiana Iris - My dad found a wheelbarrow full by the curb at one of his jobsites several years ago.  He brought a couple over for me and left several for my mom.  I had these planted near the HVAC drainage pipe from the roof since the ground stays damp there.  But they never bloomed.  I transplanted them a few weeks ago and look at this!

Here's a couple of budding things:

This hydrangea didn't bloom last year, it's my favorite since it usually blooms a really pretty shade of purple.  I can't wait to see if it blooms like that again this year.

I only have a few peony buds this year.
I don't know if you can see all of the buds in this picture...but this New Dawn rose bush is covered in like a ga-jillion buds!  It's crazy!

My husband also picked up some pine straw over the weekend and I got it all in the flower beds.  It looks so much better!  I laid sheets of newspaper under the pine straw to help keep down the weeds.

Hope you have a great week!

You have a lovely garden! The photos are wonderful and the flowers are all beautiful. Our blueberry bushes are doing great, they come back each year even bigger with lots of blueberries.

Lovely pictures! Your clematis might be durandii, but I am not certain. It is for sure not Jackmanii, because I grow that one and it doesn't look like your picture. Durandii will not cling to a support on its own, and it stays a little shorter than some of the other clematis vines.

Oh, you have so many pretty things blooming! We have been experiencing lots of rain and really cool temps, so things are slowly turning green. We are planting 3 blackberry bushes this year, I'm so excited! How long do they usually take before bearing fruit?

Love the rose bouquet. It's gorgeous! I planted a New Dawn climber last year. Am eager to see how it performs. Our peonies are about the same size and they are loaded. Love, love, love those blossoms! The blueberry flowers look like little bells. :) Thanks for sharing your lovely garden! ~~Rhonda

You have lots of pretty flowers, thanks for posting your pictures. I had a New Dawn rose at a previous house/garden, and it was beautiful! Yours will look smashing when it flowers, with all those buds.

So much going on in your garden- joys of living in the south, huh? :-)

I had two New Dawn's in our old house, loved the bloom, but they were usually covered with black spot. I should try one again in this new house- yours is going to be spectacular!

Your newspaper & mulch bed looks so good- don't you just love it?

Great pics of your gardens!

We picked about 6 gallons of wild blackberries (we call them dewberries) last week. We planted blueberries last year but they didn't produce, this year there were a few blooms so hopefully we'll get a few. We only have one variety, we need to remedy that!

Thanks for visiting my blog!
