I want to thank all of you for entering the Cheerios 100,000 Book Giveaway. This was my most successful giveaway and I have each and every one of you to thank for that. And the winner is: #121 - Kimberly Musselwhite said "Florida needs readers and especially bi-lingual readers!"

Kimberly has been notified via email and has 72 hours to respond or another winner will be chosen. MyBlogSpark will be sending Kimberly her prize package in the mail.

Thanks again to everyone who participated and stay tuned for a new giveaway coming soon for a $25 Gift Card to BJ's.

GIVEAWAY: Cheerios 100,000 Book Giveaway

Access to books is essential to reading development. However, did you know that over 80 percent of childcare centers serving low-income children lack age-appropriate books? And a recent study shows that the ratio of books per child in middle income neighborhoods is 13 to 1, while in low-income neighborhoods, the ratio is 1 age-appropriate book for every 300 children.

The Cheerios family of cereals, First Book and Jon Scieszka, author of the popular “Trucktown” series and other children’s books, have joined together to deliver 100,000 books to community-based programs serving children in n
eed – and we’d love your help! All you have to do is go online with your child and test your combined knowledge of children’s books by answering trivia questions related to “Trucktown” and other great children’s books.

For every trivia question answered correctly, you can cast one vote for the state you would like to receive books. The five states receiving the m
ost votes will get 20,000 books each, for a total of 100,000 books. Visit www.FirstBook.org/Scieszka to test your knowledge and start voting.

MyBlogSpark contacted me about this review and giveaway for Cheerios and a variety of books, I couldn't reply fast enough!

The first thing I noticed was that each book is written in English and Spanish, on the same page. I love this idea! My daughter watches Spanish cartoons and we have friends who are bi-lingual. So she understands some simple Spanish words and phrases. Since I can read Spanish but have difficulty knowing exactly what I'm reading, I found it helpful to see the English translation above the Spanish rendition. So far we've read "Tea for Ruby" and "Ballyhoo Bay". These little books are adorable! And I know your little one(s) will enjoy them too!

Cheerios through MyBlogSpark provided us with a free box of their Frosted Cheerios variety of cereal. We have never tried this cereal before now and I have say, we love it. Our family loves cereal and since I have a 17 month old baby who likes to feed himself, these are the perfect breakfast accompanied by a banana and a sippy cup full of milk. We also received a $25 gift card to Barnes and Noble. We were just there over the weekend to pick a couple of great books so I know we are going to be able to put this to some good use -- we are a bunch of bookworms in our family!

Now for the giveaway information: MyBlogSpark along with Cheerios will provide one reader with an assortment of books, one of the many varieties of Cheerios cereal and a $25 gift card to Barnes & Noble.

You have three chances to win. You can enter in each of the three ways. You are only required to answer the first question which will result in your first entry. The other two entries are extra chances for you to win.

1. Answer the question below.
2. Subscribe via feedburner. (You'll find the box in the right sidebar. Submit your email address and after feedburner sends you an email, please verify it. Unverified email accounts will not be qualified and you must remain a subscriber for the duration of this giveaway.)

This giveaway is open for US Residents ONLY. Giveaway ends Monday, December 7, 2009 at 9 p.m. EST. One (1) winner will be chosen by random.org. The winner must respond to email notification within 72 hours or a new winner will be chosen. MyBlogSpark will ship the prize pack to the winner.

New to CVS - Want to learn the Game?

When teaching others about CVS, I've often referred to it as "playing a game with the computer". For those of you who have attended one of my coupon workshops, you'll remember I told you it can take about an hour to teach CVS. Well, I received an email from a fellow coupon blogger who did an entire CVS Tutorial and it took her almost 6 hours to complete it! Yes, it is in depth, but if you really want to understand how to maximize your savings at CVS, you will want to read her tutorial.

Lissa at "Saving Your Cents" listed her CVS 101 Tutorial for all of you to enjoy.

Hallmark $5 Off Any Purchase

I looked through my December issue of Woman's Day magazine, only to be disappointed to find out the coupon was not inside!

Well guess what? You can print it now! Go HERE to get your copy and head to the nearest Hallmark Gold Crown Store to redeem it! Think of all the cards you'll be needing soon (anniversaries, weddings, baby showers, etc...) and you might be able to get a couple for FREE!

Walgreens Scenario 12/6-12/12 (SPECIAL 4 DAY SALE 12/9-12/12)

Monthly Totals December 2009

Well, I did it again. Over budget. I'm glad we started keeping track of our expenses. At least we know where the money is going and how it was spent. This month I learned I spent far too much at Target during the first week of the month. And it was really dumb, because I knew that I could have gotten the craft supplies at the Dollar Tree. I wish I had returned them to get our money back but Haylei tore open the bag when we got home. My other unusual purchase was when my momma and I took a trip to an Organic/Natural Foods store to buy some bulk organic whole wheat pastry flour, honey and herbs. Totally worth it as I used most of it during my freezer baking day. Here's how it ended up:

Grocery Stores:
Total OOP $200.32, but received $655.70 worth of product. This works out to be $50.08 each week for groceries saving $455.38 or 69.45% (over budget $.08).

Drug Stores:
Total OOP $81.79, but received $480.00 worth of product. This works out to be $20.45 each week for drug store related purchases (including diapers and wipes and my crazy Target trip) saving $398.21 or 82.96%.

I ended up with $1135.70 worth of product for $282.11 saving $853.59 (75.16%). ($70.53 combined weekly OOP).

Hope you had a great month!

The Daily Grind: Water? You want me to DRINK it???

Have you ever had trouble getting your children to drink water? Some kids naturally love water. My cousin's youngest daughter loves water, drinks it like she was a fish. Others detest it, like you were trying to poison them! I have problems getting my 3-1/2 year old daughter to drink water and that in-turn affects how my 18 month old son drinks it. He does everything she does (including temper tantrums!).

Recently, my son has developed a fascination with straws. I remember reading about a milestone they encounter for fine motor skills. You can help them hone this skill by setting them on the floor with a colander and some spaghetti noodles. Show them how to put the spaghetti noodles through the holes on the colander. Well, the same principle applies with the straw
and a lid. He sat for about half an hour in his high chair pulling the straw in and out of the hole. So then I thought - Hey - let's make this a "special" straw and put water in a cup with a new straw and see if he'll drink it. BINGO! It worked like a charm!

My daughter on the other hand is smarter than her little brother and can see through my ploy so we'll have to try a little different approach on her. Anyone have suggestions?

Freezer Cooking Day Done - Dec 2009

I really had so much fun doing this Freezer Cooking Day! I love to cook anyway and being able to dedicate an entire day to cooking was so fun. My list was completed plus I added the two pans of Turkey Tetrazzini (which tasted so good!) and then today I made up 2 large jars of Mexican Hot Cocoa Mix. Here's what I finished:

36 granola bars (18 chocolate chips, 18 cherry chocolate chip)
2 pans Turkey Tetrazzini
6 pizza dough balls
7 bags shredded chicken
2 quarts chicken stock
4 quarts Mexican Chili Beans
16 waffles
2 jars Mexican Hot Cocoa Mix

Make a list, check your list, make sure you have your ingredients on your list...you get the idea? Yep, I wish I had double-double checked my ingredients. I ran out of yeast, so I didn't have enough to make 6 more pizza dough balls which means I'll need to make some before the month's out. When I doubled the Mexican Chili Bean recipe, I completely forgot to double the actual ingredients for the Mexican part of the Mexican Chili Beans. So while they tasted good when I tried them before freezing them, I'm not sure they will be as flavorful as I want when it's time to use them. Oh well, you live and you learn.

Next month I want to try do make up more casseroles ahead of time so I'll probably do more shredded chicken in preparation. BUT I need to get through this month first :)

Thanks for hanging in there with me! Did you make something for once-a-month-cooking?

NEW Cookbook: $5 Dinner Mom

I love reading Erin's blog at $5 Dinners. She has great recipes made from ingredients she gets pretty cheap at the store. She has a new cookbook to be released on December 22, 2009. You can pre-order through Amazon.com.

You can request your copy of The $5 Dinner Mom Cookbook: 200 Recipes for Quick, Delicious, and Nourishing Meals That Are Easy on the Budget and a Snap to Prepare.

The best part, it's only $10.11 right now! You can use your Swagbucks-turned-$5 Amazon.com eCards.

RECIPE: Mexican Hot Cocoa Mix

This looked so yummy. So I couldn't resist trying the recipe. It came from a January 2009 Good Housekeeping magazine. Here's what you need:

Mexican Hot Cocoa Mix
1-1/4 cup sugar
1-1/2 cup cocoa powder
6 oz semi-sweet chocolate
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper

Put all the ingredients into the food processor with the blade attachment and process until nearly ground smooth. Pour ingredients into a jar with a tight fitting lid.

You can stop here but why not just dress up the jars a little bit:

To make the hot cocoa:
Add 3 Tablespoons of cocoa mix to 1 cup hot milk. Serve with a dollop of whipped cream or marshmallows.

This is shelf stable for 6 months at room temperature in a container with a tight fitting lid.
